Super Eagles to face a South American Side in Second 2025 Friendly

  • The Super Eagles of Nigeria are set to face a South American team in another international friendly in November
  • The three-time AFCON winner played a 1-1 draw against Russia at the Luzhniki Stadium in their first international friendly
  • Nigeria are still struggling to qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup but have the AFCON next December

The Nigeria Football Federation have concluded plans for the Super Eagles to play their second friendly.

Nigeria played against Russia in an international friendly, which ended 1-1 with Semi Ajayi scoring an own goal, while Tolu Arokodare scored his first international goal on June 6.

The first international friendly took place after Nigeria won the 2025 Unity Cup title, defeating Ghana and Jamaica.

Eric Chelle used the international friendly as a build-up to the World Cup qualifying matches against Rwanda and South Africa, but Nigeria ultimately secured four out of six points.

Who is Nigeria playing?

The Super Eagles will face Colombia at Citi Field in Queens, New York City, USA, on November 18.

According to Daily Post, both countries will take on each other for the third time ever, with ticket sales coming up on Monday, September 30. Their last encounter ended in a 1-1 draw.

The Cafeteros battle New Zealand in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, on November 15 before heading to take on the three-time AFCON winners.

Meanwhile, the West African giants have a date with Venezuela at the Blue Energy Stadium in Houston, on November 14, four days before their encounter with Colombia.

Colombia, currently ranked 14th in the World, is one of the five South American teams to qualify for the 2026 World Cup.

Nigeria are on the verge of missing their back-to-back World Cup after their unimpressive performance in the CAF qualification group C.

The Super Eagles have two final World Cup qualifying matches left against the Crocodile of Lesotho and the Cheetahs of Benin Republic.

South Africa top the group with 17 points, followed by Benin Republic with 14 points and Nigeria in third position with 11 points.

The group will be opened if the World football governing body sanctions Bafana Bafana for fielding an ineligible player against Lesotho in 2024.

Nigeria prepare for AFCON

Nigeria have shifted focus to the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Morocco, scheduled for December 21, 2025, to January 18, 2026.

According to Soccernet, the Super Eagles plan to use the two friendlies to prepare the squad for the biannual tournament.

Nigeria will face Tanzania in their opening match in Fez on December 23, with Tunisia and Uganda in Group C.

The Super Eagles finished runner-up at the 2023 AFCON in Ivory Coast.
