Panic has swept through the African Democratic Congress (ADC) as the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) allegedly intensifies its clampdown on senior figures within the opposition coalition aiming to unseat President Bola Tinubu in the 2027 general election.

On Monday, August 11, former Sokoto State Governor, Aminu Tambuwal, a prominent coalition member, was interrogated at the EFCC headquarters in Abuja over alleged fraudulent cash withdrawals totalling ₦189 billion.

Reports claim the EFCC is targeting top ADC members before the 2027 elections.

According to an EFCC insider, the transactions allegedly breached the Money Laundering (Prevention and Prohibition) Act, 2022.

“Tambuwal is being held over suspicious withdrawals in clear violation of the law,” the source claimed.

As reported by Punch, EFCC spokesperson Dele Oyewale declined to comment, but confirmed the ongoing investigation.

ADC accuses EFCC of political intimidation

ADC National Publicity Secretary, Bolaji Abdullahi, confirmed that three former governors, all coalition leaders, had been invited for questioning.

“This is a clear attempt to intimidate our members and weaken our resolve. We are determined to rescue Nigeria," Abdullahi said.

In a statement, the ADC accused the EFCC of “acting like a department of the APC” by reviving old cases against opposition politicians while ignoring allegations against ruling party members.

“The EFCC is meant to serve Nigerians, not a political party,” the statement read.

EFCC denies bias allegations

In response, Oyewale described the claims as “untenable and ridiculous”.

“Where are the facts? Our mandate is to fight financial crime, not to protect or attack any political party,” he said.

Coalition faces internal cracks

The EFCC’s actions have added strain to the opposition coalition, with some members distancing themselves.
