APC Loses Key Members to NNPP in Ganduje’s Constituency

  • Prominent APC members in Dawakin Tofa, Ganduje’s home constituency, have defected to the NNPP

A group of prominent All Progressives Congress members in Dawakin Tofa, the home constituency of former APC National Chairman Abdullahi Ganduje, have switched allegiance to the New Nigeria Peoples Party.

Kano state governor Abba Yusuf received the new members during a ceremony at the Government House on Friday, August 8. His spokesperson, Sanusi Bature, confirmed the development in a statement.

Addressing the gathering, Yusuf described the mass defection from Ganduje's APC as a sign of approval for the policies his administration has implemented in the past two years.

He recalled touring all 44 local government areas during the 2023 election campaign, noting that Dawakin Tofa was a strategic location in his political journey.

“I promised to deliver dividends of democracy to every part of Kano State. Dawakin Tofa is a crucial local government in our struggle, and I am the happiest person to witness this massive defection from APC to NNPP,” he said.

Governor names major projects ongoing in Kano

The governor listed completed and ongoing projects in the area, including the finishing of a five-kilometre road project abandoned by the previous administration.

He also pledged to construct a new school in the constituency. Yusuf assured the defectors of equal treatment within the NNPP and said preparations were underway for a familiarisation tour ahead of the 2027 elections.

In a move aimed at improving economic administration, Yusuf revealed that the Dawanau International Market would be restructured into an agency with a board and a managing director.

He also praised Dawakin Tofa Local Government Chairman for internally generating N500 million, which was used to fund various community projects. The governor promised to address all complaints from the constituency.

The local government chairman, in his remarks, said his administration had completed work in 15 primary schools and sponsored over 1,000 students in tertiary institutions.

NNPP state chairman, Honourable Hashim Dungurawa, congratulated the new members, expressing confidence that the area would surpass its previous electoral achievements.

“God willing, Dawakin Tofa will do even better,” he said.

Those who joined the NNPP include Hon. Nura Tumfafi, Hon. Isyaku Dahiru Kwa, Alhaji Umar Ismail, Alhaji Abba Muntari, Sani Shafiu, Hussaini Adamu, Alhaji Abdullahi Ayuba, Magaji Ruba-Ruba, Sabo Adamu, and Abdullahi Sale Turaki.

Ganduje resigns as APC national chairman

Earlier, Legit.ng reported that the national chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, stepped down from his position.

The two-term former Kano governor resigned as the APC national chairman in Abuja, the nation's capital on Friday, June 27, 2025.

The resignation of the former governor of Kano state as APC chairman has been linked to the forthcoming 2027 presidential election, as the opposition's coalition party grows bigger.
