Breaking: El-Rufai to Spend More Days in Detention as Court Makes Fresh Announcement

The Federal High Court sitting in Kaduna has adjourned its ruling on the bail application filed by the immediate past governor of Kaduna State, Nasir El-Rufai, to Tuesday, April 14. The former governor is facing trial on alleged graft.

The court session, which was presided over by Justice Rilwan M. Aikawa, was held in Kaduna on Wednesday, April 1.

Why EFCC is prosecuting Nasir El-Rufai

Leadership reported that El-Rufai is facing prosecution on a 10-count charge stemming from allegations of corruption filed by the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC).

The lead counsel to the former governor, Oluwole Iyamu (SAN), disclosed the judgment date to newsmen following the court session, stating that the argument on the bail application has been completed.

He explained that the prosecution and defence teams had presented their submissions on the application before the court and expressed optimism that justice would be served

Earlier on Tuesday, March 31, the hearing was adjourned to Wednesday, April 1. The adjournment came after the former governor buried his mother in Abuja.

Adenekan Ayoola said emotion cannot win the case

"Not a big deal, the mourning period is over. Emotions don't win cases, as my Learner friend told me @egi_nupe. Nah, the house he returned to."

Zaza recalled El-Rufai's time in office:

"El-Rufai was a mini-god during Buhari's presidency. I don’t think he ever thought a day like this would come. The person protecting him is no more. It will be the same for these Tinubu boys who think they are untouchable. Their own will be worse. They should just flee the country."

"This, our justice is not blind. So if you are in custody and you lose your mother, can you get 3-5 days off custody?"

Oluwatigbemiga Asiwaju Mourinho Fidelix said the government should not be criticised for his release:

"So all those talking of illegality should rest now. As you can see, he was allowed to bury his mother."

El-Rufai's mother is dead

Legit.ng earlier reported that former Kaduna state governor, Nasir El-Rufai, has lost his mother, Hajiya Umma El-Rufai, to death, as he is battling in the ICPC custody.

Mohammed Bello El-Rufai, the son of the former governor and lawmaker representing Kaduna North Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, announced her death in a statement on Friday, March 27.

Many Nigerians have sent their condolences to the former governor and his family following the demise of Hajia El-Rufai.
