Tems Opens Up on Why She Can Never Marry For Love Alone: "You Could Just Discard Me"

  • The singer emphasised that compatibility and character outweigh romance when the "rosy" days end

Nigerian music star Tems has given fans a rare glimpse into her mindset on love and marriage.

In a recent interview with media personality Angie Martinez, the award-winning singer spoke candidly about relationships, commitment, and what truly sustains a marriage.

For many, love is seen as the foundation of marriage. But for Tems, it goes much deeper.

According to the singer, marriage should not be built on emotions alone but on growth, compatibility, and purpose.

“Marriage is something that makes you better as a human being. It should,” she explained.

She emphasised that while love is important, it is not enough to sustain a lifelong commitment.

“It shouldn’t be about only love, it’s about compatibility… whether a relationship makes you a better person,” she added.

Tems also addressed what she believes many people overlook when entering marriage — the difficult moments.

Unlike fairy-tale expectations, she noted that marriage comes with challenges that test both partners.

“Marriage is a whole another level… it’s supposed to bring out the hard times,” she said.

Her words paint a picture of marriage as a journey that requires resilience, not just romance.

Tems made it clear that she values accountability in a relationship — something she believes is rooted in faith.

“My partner has to be a God-fearing man,” she stated.

Explaining further, she questioned how someone without a sense of accountability could commit fully to love.

“If you’re the god of your life, why would you love me forever? You could just discard me anytime you want,” she said.
