Tragedy as Bandits Run Riot in Sokoto, Kill 21 Vigilantes, Village Head

- Bandits have killed a village head and 21 others in separate attacks in two LGAs in Sokoto state

- The sad incident has been confirmed by the governor of Sokoto state who pledged to compensate the families of the 21 victims who were vigilantes

- Governor Tambuwal also announced plans to introduce allowances for vigilantes to appreciate their efforts in maintaining peace and security

Armed bandits have carried out multiple attacks in Rabah and Sabon Birni local government areas of Sokoto state, killing 22 people including a village head.

Premium Times reported that the victims include 21 members of a vigilante group who were killed in a gun battle on Sunday, May 23, in Rabah LGA.

In another attack on Tuesday, May 25, the village head of Sabon Birni was killed by the criminals.

The governor of Sokoto state, Aminu Tambuwal, on Monday, May 24, confirmed that 21 persons were killed in Rabah LGA.

He sympathised with the families of the deceased vigilantes and pledged to restructure vigilante groups in the state, Thisday also reported.

The govenor also pledged that his administration will provide allowances to the vigilante members for their efforts in ensuring the security of lives and properties.

Governor Tambuwal added that the families of the slain vigilantes will be compensated.

"It's very unfortunate. What my people are painfully experiencing everyday the solution is not very near. Sabon Birni Gobir used to be peaceful and safest place until Bigz menz took over."

"They die in protecting others lives , may their souls rest in jannat."

In another report, one police officer was recently killed by armed bandits at Runjin Sambo area of Sokoto South local government area of Sokoto state.

The bandits numbering about 20 were sighted on motorbikes close to the premises of Usmanu Danfodio University main campus at about 1.45 am On Tuesday, May 11.

They were reported to have later abandoned their motorbikes and moved on foot close to a mosque around a hospital in the area where a sizable number of Muslim faithful gathered for tahajjud prayer.

Meanwhile, the Northern Elders Forum (NEF) has told President Muhammadu Buhari to protect Nigeria’s territorial integrity and secure the lives of Nigerians or accept that he is incapable of leading the nation.

Going further, the forum condemned what it described as an attack on Fulanis in some part of the south, claiming northern people now live in fear.

This was disclosed in a statement signed by the forum's director, publicity and advocacy, Dr Hakeem Baba-Ahmed.
