Oyo Bye-Election: APC Candidate Loses Polling Unit as ADC Alleges Vote-buying

  • The candidate of the APC in the August 16 bye-election in Ibadan North Federal Constituency, Adewale Olatunji, lost his polling unit to the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) candidate, Fola Oyekunle
  • Out of 17 total votes cast at Unit 27, Ward 10, where Olatunji voted, PDP recorded nine, APC 6, while LP received the remaining 2
  • Meanwhile, the African Democratic Congress (ADC) has alleged that there was vote buying during the bye-election

Ibadan, Oyo state - The All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate in the Saturday, August 16 bye-election in the Ibadan North Federal Constituency, Adewale Olatunji, lost his polling unit to the PDP candidate, Fola Oyekunle.

Legit.ng gathers that a total of 17 votes were recorded at Unit 27, Ward 10, where Olatunji voted. Out of the 17 votes cast, PDP received 9 votes while APC received 6 votes, leaving the remaining two votes for the LP.

Oyo bye-election: PDP reacts

As sorting of votes continues in Ibadan North Federal Constituency, the PDP has expressed satisfaction over the peaceful conduct of the election.

Speaking for the PDP was a former member of the House of Representatives, Hon. Abiodun Awoleye, who expressed satisfaction over what he described as peaceful and high turnout of voters in his ward.

Awoleye, who cast his vote at Unit 24 of Ward 4, represented Ibadan North Federal Constituency from 2011 until 2019.

Speaking shortly after casting his vote, the former lawmaker while speaking, expressed satisfaction over the turnout of the voters in the unit and other units in his ward.

Awoleye, who is also the Chairman of Oyo State Primary Healthcare Board, said that despite some hitches in some units, the election has been smooth.

He added that there is no report of violence or snatching of ballot boxes in any of the units.

"My observation is that the whole exercise is rancour-free. No reports of violence. This is my ward," he said.
"The voters have been coming, and it is encouraging. No violence. Turnout of voters in this Ward is impressive.”

Oyo bye-election: ADC alleges rigging

Meanwhile, the candidate of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) in the bye-election, Femi Akin-Alamu, has raised the alarm over alleged vote buying in some polling units and wards.

Akin-Alamu raised the alarm while speaking with journalists shortly after casting his vote at Unit 038, Ward 11, University of Ibadan.

“There is vote buying that is going on; it is not an allegation. There is vote-buying that is going on in Wards 1 to 4," he alleged.

APC asks INEC to cancel Kano bye-election

In a related development, the APC has asked the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to cancel the bye-elections in the Shanono/Bagwai constituency and the Ghari constituency rerun election in Kano state.

Felix Morka, the APC publicity secretary, in a statement on Saturday, August 16, explained that the cancellation was important because of the widespread and extreme violence, as well as election disruption by some armed thugs in many polling units in Shanono, Bagwai and Ghari constituencies.

Morka explained that verifiable reports from the Shanono and Bagwai local government areas and Ghari constituency, where voted were reportedly fleeing the polling areas and the security operatives were overwhelmed by the violence.
