Tanzania has set out six conditions that any foreigner seeking to become a citizen of the country through naturalisation must fulfil.
The requirements, drawn from the country's citizenship law, cover everything from how long an applicant has lived in Tanzania to the kind of person they are and what they plan to do once granted citizenship.

Tanzania's 6 conditions for naturalisation
The conditions are as follows:
1. The applicant must have resided in Tanzania throughout the 12 months immediately preceding the application.
2. During the ten years before those 12 months, the applicant must have lived in Tanzania for a combined total of at least seven years.
3. The applicant must have an adequate knowledge of either Kiswahili or the English language.
4. The applicant must be of good character.
5. In terms of past and potential contribution to the national economy, scientific and technological advancement, or national social and cultural welfare, the applicant must be considered a suitable candidate for citizenship.
6. The applicant must intend, if naturalised, to continue residing permanently in Tanzania.
What the requirements mean for prospective citizens
The conditions make clear that Tanzania is not simply looking for long-term residents. The country also expects applicants to bring genuine value, whether through economic contributions, professional expertise, or cultural engagement, and to demonstrate a firm commitment to making Tanzania their permanent home.

Nigeria opens citizenship routes to foreigners
Meanwhile, Legit.ng recently reported that the Federal Ministry of Interior has outlined the legal pathways through which eligible foreigners can acquire Nigerian citizenship.
These include naturalisation, registration and citizenship by investment, with each route having specific requirements.
