Female pilot speaks on nighttime flying

In a TikTok video, @captaintk, a professional pilot, took the time to explain the systems and procedures that enable pilots to fly safely at night.

According to the captain, the key to successful nighttime flying lies in a combination of rigorous training, trust in technology, and adherence to strict protocols.

She noted that one of the biggest misconceptions about flying is the idea that pilots rely on visual cues to navigate.

In reality, nighttime flying is all about relying on instruments and technology, which she captured in the video.

In her words:

"Is there a road in the sky? How do you fly planes at night? So how do pilot's fly at night? It's one of the biggest aviation mysteries for many people but for us pilots it's all about systems, training and trust. Here's how it works. Here’s how it works: 1. Instrument Flight Rules (IFR): At night, visual flying is out. Pilots fly using instruments only, this is what we call IFR. 2. Navigation Systems: Tools like GPS, VOR, and ILS guide our altitude, heading, and approach especially in poor visibility.

"3. Cockpit Lighting & Displays: Everything inside the cockpit is designed to work in the dark, backlit screens, night mode, and weather monitoring systems help us stay on track. 4. Night Flight Training: Night flying is a skill. Pilots train to fight illusions (like the black-hole effect) and navigate confidently even when the sky is pitch black. 5. ATC Communication: Even at night, we’re in constant touch with Air Traffic Control, guiding us through safe airspace and clearances. Truth is night flying isn’t about seeing. It’s about knowing. That’s the kind of confidence training gives you.

"People wonder is there a road in the sky? How would you see the road? There's no road but we have this. They put the information of our destination in here. There's just something about this. And then we have just something that will work like GPS and will direct us to the destination. Whether there is light or no light. Whether there is darkness or daylight, it's the same procedure."
