Karim Benzema scored a brace as Real Madrid beat Celta Vigo 3-1 away from home to leapfrog Barcelona into second place in the La Liga table.

It took the Frenchman just 20 minutes to open the scoring as he latched onto a Toni Kross pass before placing the ball into the far corner of the net.

The goal saw Benzema extend his scoring run to six straight matches for Real Madrid.

Ten minutes after, it was 2-0 as Benzema again produced a superb finish inside the box after Celta Vigo gave away the ball inside their danger zone.

As Real Madrid looked to be cruising, Celta Vigo got themselves right back into the game as Santi Mina got on the end of a Denis Suarez free-kick to guide a header past Thibaut Courtois. The first half ended 2-1 in favour of Real Madrid.

At the start of the second half, Celta Vigo came all out for an equaliser with Iago Aspas striking the post from a free-kick

But it was Real Madrid who scored again in stoppage time, with Benzema providing the assist this time around as his cross inside the box was met by Marco Asensio who converted from close range.

It ended 3-1 in favourof Zinedine Zidane's men as Real Madrid narrow the gap on Atletico Madrid in top spot to just three points.

The 30-year-old joined Real Madrid in 2019 in a deal valued at around €146.1 million including add ons while he earns £400,000 on a weekly basis.

With the forward planning to go through another ankle operation, a Spanish doctor has warned that the former Chelsea star may never play again.
