JUST IN: One killed, scores hospitalised as Fulani herdsmen, farmer clash in Nasarawa

- One person has been reportedly killed in Nasarawa when Fulani herdsmen clashed with a farmer

- The Benue state government had started implementation of anti-open grazing law, forcing herdsmen to flee the state for the neighbouring state

One person has been reportedly killed when some Fulani herdsmen moving from Benue state clashed with a farmer over mischief on farmlands in Jangaru community of Awe local government area of Nasarawa state.

New Telegraph reports that the incident occurred when some Fulani cattle trespassed a farm in Jangaru area of Awe, leaving one person dead and scores hospitalised at a hospital in Awe headquarters of Awe local government of the state.

Legit.ng gathered that a farmer in the area who pleaded anonymity for fear of the unknown, said thousands of cattle and herdsmen moving from Benue to Nasarawa state to evade the Benue anti-open grazing law has increased at the border communities, heightening fear of impending crises.

He said that farmers in Jangaru and other border communities are having sleepless nights over the increasing number of herdsmen, a situation he said, is forcing farmers to harvest crops that are not ripped for harvest.

Another farmer who simply called his name John lamented the unimaginable level of destruction of crops at the border areas and called on both the federal and state governments to urgently intervention in order to save farmers and communities from the invading herdsmen.

He added that the residents of the border communities are living in perpetual fear of attacks by the herdsmen and called on security

agencies to provide security in the affected areas to safeguard lives and properties.

The farmer also called on the authorities concern to prevail on the herdsmen to respect the rights of the farmers by keeping to their grazing routes and stop causing mischief on farms and posing threat to life and properties.

It was gathered that some herdsmen who had moved to the border areas between Nasarawa and Benue states are now making moves back to Benue state to challenge the anti-open grazing law.

According to New Telegraph, the police public relation officer (PPRO) Nasarawa state police command, Idirisu Kennedy, a Deputy Superintendent of Police,(DSP) confirmed the killing of one person, adding that the command has commenced investigation into the incident, saying that no arrest was made.

Meanwhile, Legit.ng had previously reported that some herdsmen and farmers in Ugaga community, Yala local government area of Cross River state clashed over the anti-open grazing bill in the state.
