Ballon d'Or trophy details

The Ballon d'Or (golden ball in English) is the trophy handed out by France Football to the best player every year since the inception of the award in 1956.

According to Sports Illustrated, it was designed and crafted by the French jewellery house Mellerio dits Meller, with production beginning six months before the award, and it takes about 100 work hours to complete.

The trophy is a ball-shaped piece with a pyrite base measuring 31 centimetres in length, 23 centimetres in diameter and weighing over 7 kilograms.

The trophy has been crafted by goldsmith Jean-Phillipe in the past decade, who welds together two halves of brass spheres, after which a layer of 24 karat gold is added to it and filled with a wax-like material.

Ballon d'Or prize money

The Ballon d'Or winner receives no financial compensation from the organisers, France Football, aside from the trophy, whose value is estimated to be $3,500 (₦5.25 million), as noted by beIN Sport.

Winners in the past have also received additional gifts from sponsors, as in the case of Lionel Messi in 2021, who received a Purnell Escape Tourbillon wristwatch.

However, despite having no direct monetary reward, players often sign contracts to include Ballon d'Or clauses, which trigger payouts for different milestones.

The award also opens up the winner to endorsement from brands, with many willing to work with the best player in the world and promote their products and services.

Clubs selling their players also include Ballon d'Or add-ons, which trigger some payments if the player gets nominated, named in the top 10, makes the podium or even wins it.

Players like Cristiano Ronaldo, Mohamed Salah, Angel Di Maria and even Anthony Martial and Nicolo Zaniolo have had Ballon d'Or clauses in their contracts.
