The Blues showed signs of not having a proper pre-season after their involvement at the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup in the United States, which they won.
Eberechi Eze scored a brilliant free kick to put Palace ahead in the first half, but the goal was disallowed due to a little-known rule after interference from Marc Guehi.
The Blues struggled throughout the rest of the match, and despite new signing Estevao providing a bright spark in the second half, it was not enough to influence the result.
Boehly's wife saved him from an awkward moment
As seen in a video going viral on social media, Chelsea co-owner Boehly had an awkward moment on TV, but his wife, Kate, came through for him.
In the 88th minute, the camera was on the American billionaire while he was glued to his phone, and his wife quickly tapped him to notify him.
As noted by Sport Bible, the couple have been together for 27 years and have been spotted together at Chelsea games in the past.
The video caught the attention of fans on social media, who made funny comments about what their club owner was up to with his phone at that time of the match.

“Tough game. We expected a tough game. We tried our best and created chances. Except for the free kick, we didn't concede chances. They are a very good team — that’s why they won two finals,” he told NBC Sports.
He refused to answer questions on whether he needs a new centre-back after the long-term injury to Cobham graduate Levi Colwill.
Why Eberechi Eze's free kick was disallowed
Legit.ng previously explained why Eberechi Eze's free kick was disallowed after the England international thought he had put Crystal Palace ahead.
The rule, which was introduced in 2019, reads that if an attacking player is less than a metre from where the free kick was taken, it becomes an indirect kick.
