"I Remain Legitimate Leader": ADC Factional Chairman Nafiu Gombe Declares
- Factional ADC has rejected David Mark’s leadership claims, calling them “unfounded” and against the party’s constitution
- Party said only bona fide members can contest leadership; process must follow NEC meeting and convention ratification
- ADC reaffirmed Alhaji Nafiu as chairman, urges unity, and expresses confidence in INEC to uphold democratic norms
Factional African Democratic Congress (ADC) has rejected recent claims to its leadership by former Senate President David Mark and his associates, describing them as “unfounded” and in breach of the party’s constitution.
The statement comes after the resignation of Chief Ralph Nwosu as National Chairman, which the party says has triggered a clear constitutional process for choosing his successor, not a scramble for power.

Dr Aminu Sani Alhassan, Special Assistant (Public Affairs) to the Interim National Chairman, said:
“In light of the resignation of Chief Ralph Nwosu, it has come to our attention that certain individuals, notably David Mark and his associates, have attempted to assert claims of leadership that are not only unfounded but also contrary to the principles and constitution of our party."

Leadership process must follow party rules
Dr Alhassan stressed that only bona fide members of the ADC are eligible to contest for leadership positions.
“The ADC’s constitution is unequivocal in stipulating that any individual seeking to assume a leadership role must first be a bona fide member of the party. This fundamental requirement cannot be overlooked or circumvented by any means,” he said.
According to him, the rightful procedure for filling the vacancy left by Nwosu’s resignation is through a National Executive Council (NEC) meeting, followed by ratification at a party convention.
Nafiu reaffirmed as chairman
The party reaffirmed Alhaji Nafiu as its legitimate National Chairman and urged members to remain calm and united.
“This meeting will serve as the legitimate forum for deliberating on the way forward. We will ensure that our party’s leadership is determined by those who are genuinely committed to the ideals and objectives of the ADC,” Dr Alhassan stated.

Confidence in INEC and unity call
The ADC said it trusts the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to protect constitutional and democratic norms in party affairs.
“We must not allow ourselves to be distracted or disheartened by the antics of those who seek to disrupt our unity and progress,” Dr Alhassan said.
“In conclusion, we stand firmly behind Alhaji Nafiu as the legitimate National Chairman of the ADC. His leadership will be instrumental in guiding our party through this transitional phase.”
