Michael Ogbuefi, a Marine and Offshore Environmental Specialist, has announced that he is stepping away from Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) after just 13 months, sparking a wave of reactions online from people surprised that anyone would voluntarily walk away from a role at Nigeria's national oil company.
Ogbuefi, who holds a PhD and is a member of the Nigerian Energy Society, joined NNPC Limited in July 2025 and officially closed that chapter on August 31, 2026.

In a post shared on LinkedIn, he reflected on what the experience meant to him, describing it as one that gave him far more than professional skills alone.
What NNPC Limited gave him
Writing about his 13 months at the company, Ogbuefi said working at NNPC offered him a rare vantage point into Nigeria's oil and gas sector, one he described as seeing the business through the lens of a national energy company.
He credited the role with deepening his understanding of the opportunities and complexities tied to Nigeria's energy sector, and said it reinforced his belief that significant value still remains to be created across the industry, both locally and on the global stage.
He expressed particular gratitude for the people he encountered during his time there, noting that the relationships and conversations from that period would remain a meaningful part of his journey going forward.
Ogbuefi did not disclose the specific role or organisation he is moving on to, but said he is leaving with excitement and a renewed sense of purpose, looking forward to applying everything he gained in a new environment.

The announcement quickly drew comments from professionals, with many expressing surprise that someone would choose to leave NNPC so soon.

NNPC increases petrol prices
Meanwhile, Legit.ng previously reported that the NNPC had increased the prices of petrol.
The adjustment adds N75 to the previous N1,270 per litre figure.
Several other major filling stations have moved in the same direction. MRS, Ranoil, and Empire Energy all reviewed their prices upward, with rates now sitting between N1,310 and N1,320 per litre, compared to the N1,230 to N1,299 per litre range they previously charged.
