  • The Danish government confirmed that applicants must have been in full-time employment or self-employment for a set minimum period
  • The requirements are tied to a fixed window of years before the date the Immigration Service decides on a permanent residence application

Denmark has announced the employment conditions that foreigners must satisfy before they can be considered for a permanent residence permit in the country.

The Danish government has laid out clear work-related requirements for immigrants aiming to settle permanently. The conditions centre on the length and consistency of employment during a defined period before an application is assessed.

Denmark's employment threshold for permanent residence

According to information published on the Danish government website, a foreigner must have been in regular, full-time employment or running their own business in Denmark for a minimum of three years and six months. That work history must fall within the four years immediately before the Immigration Service reaches a decision on the individual's application.

The official statement reads:

"In order to qualify for a permanent residence permit, you must have had regular, full-time employment or been self-employed in Denmark for at least 3 years and 6 months during the 4 years prior to the date the Immigration Service reaches a decision about your application for permanent residence."

What the work requirement means for applicants

The structure of the requirement means that simply living in Denmark for several years is not sufficient on its own. An applicant's employment record is measured against a rolling four-year window, with the specific cut-off point being the date the Immigration Service processes the application rather than the date of submission.

For many African migrants considering Denmark as a long-term destination, the announcement signals that stable, documented employment is a central pillar of the country's permanent residency pathway. Self-employment is recognised alongside traditional full-time work, provided it meets the threshold of three and a half years within the applicable period.
