Gbajabiamila Denies Pledging To Offset ASUU’s Salary Arrears

  • Femi Gbajabiamila has denied promising to ensure that the federal government pays arrears of salaries owed to ASUU members

Members of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) will not be happy with the recent statement of the speaker of the House of Representatives, Femi Gbajabiamila.

The speaker who was instrumental in the calling off of their 8-month strike has denied pledging to ensure an offset of the arrears of salaries owed them.

The denial is contained in a statement issued in Abuja on Wednesday by the Chairman House of Representatives Committee on Information, Benjamin Kalu, Premium Times reports.

The denial followed alleged claims by the ASUU President, Prof. Emmanuel Osodeke that Gbajabiamila had failed to deliver on a written commitment that the government would offset the lecturers’ salary arrears immediately after calling off their strike.

ASUU Strike: Atiku reveals strategy to make universities work

Meanwhile, Atiku Abubakar, the presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has said he would meet the demands of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU).

The former vice president promised to pay the backlog of salaries of the embattled union if elected as president in the 2023 election. Since their resumption, the union had been at loggerheads with the federal government and had refused to their salaries, it argued that its members would make up the lost time in the classroom.

But the PDP presidential candidate assured the lecturers that he would pay their backlogs when he appeared at The People's Townhall hosted by Channels Television in Abuja on Sunday, December 12.

Students, business owners excited as FG hints at ending ASUU strike after 140 days

Legit.ng earlier reported that some business owners and students have expressed their excitement as the federal government hints at ending the about four months of ASUU strike soon.

The industrial action, which was commenced on February 14 by the academic union, entered its 140 days on Monday, July 4.

ASUU had said if the government finished the testing of its paying platform, UTAS and signed the renegotiated agreement, it would call off the strike immediately.
