Urging people to challenge conventions, Chimamanda said they are made by someone and repeated by others.

According to her, the inspiration behind what she did on her wedding day was that western wedding traditions sidelined the mother of the bride.

She noted that the man walks the bride down the aisle, the man has the first dance with the bride, and oftentimes gives a speech while the mother does nothing.

Chimamanda said:

"We can unmake convention to make things more just, more complete, more beautiful."
