Her mother is the first lady of Nigeria. Mrs Buhari runs a successful business as the founder and managing director of Hanzy Spa. She is also the principal of Hanzy Beauty Institute, a beauty salon in Kaduna and Abuja.

Halima has nine siblings, five from her father's first marriage to Safinatu and four from her father's second marriage to her mother, Aisha Buhari. Her five half-siblings are Zulaihat (deceased), Fatima, Musa (deceased), Hadiza, and Safinatu. Her four other siblings are Aisha, Yusuf, Zahra, and Amina.

Zulaihat died in November 2012 from complications caused by sickle cell anemia after giving birth to a baby. Musa also succumbed to sickle cell anemia.
