- Leonardo Bonucci has backed his team-mate Ronaldo who lost a penalty
- Ronaldo’s spot-kick hit the upright in their game against AC Milan
- Juventus have however qualified for the Coppa Italia final following the away goals’ rule
Leonardo Bonucci has defended his team-mate Cristiano Ronaldo following his spot-kick miss during their second-leg semifinal clash against AC Milan in the Coppa Italia on Friday, June 12.
Juventus are through to the final of this year's Coppa Italia championship on an away goals' rule despite failing to find the back of the net in the second leg of their semifinal clash.
The Old Lady had a chance to take the lead just 16 minutes after the encounter but Ronaldo failed to find the back of the net.
It was the first-ever time the 35-year-old missed a spot-kick in the colours of the Italian League champions, but his mistake didn't haunt his team at the end of the meeting.
This came moments before Ante Rebic was sent off in the 17th minute for a reckless challenge on Brazilian defender Danilo.
It would be recalled that the two teams could not be separated in the first leg of the encounter with Ronaldo scoring a late minute goal at San Siro to cancel out Rebic's early strike.
However, the away goal proved highly valuable on Friday night for the Turin based club as it was all they needed to secure a passage to the final of the competition.
In his reaction to Ronaldo’s penalty miss, Bonucci stated that greatest players also miss penalties and that Ronaldo will be back.
"Even the greatest miss. Cristiano is always important for us. He was unfortunate today and Donnarumma did well,” Bonucci told Rai Sport.
"We'll see a great Juventus and a great Ronaldo again."
Legit.ng earlier reported that former Manchester Unite star Owen Hargreaves has denied claims that former team-mate Cristiano Ronaldo is an egomaniac as he is sometimes perceived to be, SunSport reports.
The former Three Lions and Bayern Munich forward recalls Ronaldo’s antics which according to him is the Juventus’ star’s true colours.
The well talented Ronaldo is famous for his devastating free-kick technique which sets him as the main set piece taker at the Old Trafford club in 2007.
