Sowore: Ezekwesili condemns arrest of journalist

A former minister of education and human rights activist, Oby Ezekwesili, has demanded the immediate release of journalist, Omoyele Sowore, who was reportedly arrested by operatives of the Department of State Services (DSS) on Saturday, August 3 over a planned protest against the government.
Ezekwesili who faulted the arrest of Sowore as unconstitutional, said the detention of the journalist was a repression against the rights of citizens.

The human rights activist noted that Sowore's right to protest is constitutionally guaranteed. She said if President Muhammadu Buhari and the federal government are not completely out of touch with the reality of distress of majority of citizens, they would have handled Sowore’s right to protest wisely.

Meanwhile, the Inspector General of Police (IGP) Mohammed Adamu, has warned that a planned revolution march organised by a group, the Global Coalition for Security and Democracy in Nigeria, is an act of treason and terrorism.
The Nigerian Police Force (NPF) in a statement through its spokesperson, Frank Mba, on Saturday, August 3, said the group has been inciting Nigerians via a video circulating on the social to join a planned revolution march against the federal government scheduled for Monday, August 5.
Mba described the planned march as an attempt to force a regime change in the country, and noted that such an action amounted to treasonable felony and acts of terrorism.
The police spokesperson said security officials will not not stand idly-by and watch any individual or group in the society cause anarchy in the country.
