How AirAsia passengers land in wrong airport

Some of the passengers on the flight reported that, following the captain's announcement that they had touched down at Incheon, they stood up to retrieve their luggage from the overhead compartment, but some of them looked out from the window, checked their phones and realised they were at Gimpo.

The Korea Herald reported that Lee Mi-hyun, one of the passengers who was in her 40s, was returning alongside her husband, as well as their 8-year-old daughter, from Malaysia, and said everyone was panicked.

She disclosed that it appeared the cabin crew were not aware that the airline had landed in Gimpo until they were informed by the passenger. She recalled that "one crew member even said she needed to call her parents, who were waiting for her at Incheon International Airport.”

Why AirAsia was diverted - official

On Thursday afternoon, AirAsia explained that the flight was diverted to Gimpo International Airport because of traffic congestion in Incheon, which emanated from adverse weather conditions. The plane was refuelled before it departed for Incheon and touched down at 10:17 p.m., which was about two hours later.

Lee explained that the airline crew did not handle the situation properly during the two-hour delay before they departed for Incheon. She added that they were confused like the passengers, and they could not even offer them water, and food was almost out on board. She recalled that some passengers said "they would rather get off at Gimpo before the plane departed for Incheon.”
