Breaking: Ghana Defence, Environment Ministers, 6 Others Killed in Helicopter Crash

Tragedy has struck in Ghana as a helicopter carrying eight people, including the country's environment and defence ministers.

Among the victims were Environment Minister Ibrahim Murtala Muhammed and Defence Minister Edward Omane Boamah. The Ghanaian authorities explained that the incident happened in the southern Ashanti region of the country.

Al Jazeera reported that the incident was disclosed by Julius Debrah, Chief of Staff to President John Mahama, on Wednesday, August 6.

Debrah's statement reads in part:

“The president and the government extend their condolences and solidarity to the families of our comrades and soldiers who fell in their service to the nation.”

People who died in Ghana helicopter crash

It further explained that the deputy national security coordinator and former minister of agriculture, Alhaji Muniru Muhammad, as well as the vice president of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), President Mahama's party, Samuel Sarpong, were among the casualties.

The incident was first reported by the Ghanaian Air Force, which disclosed that a military helicopter disappeared from the radar, not long after taking off from Accra at about 09:00 local time.

The force explained that the helicopter was on its way to Obuasi, the north-west of the country's capital. Eyewitnesses in the Ashanti Region report a fiery crash in the Adansi Amrofuom District, with the aircraft allegedly burned beyond recognition.

How Ghana mourns helicopter crash victims

According to the presidency, flags would be flown at half-mast and that President Mahama had suspended all his official activities for the day in honour of the victims. The government had yet to explain the cause of the crash.

Meanwhile, Nigerian President Bola Tinubu has extended his condolences to the people of Ghana and President John Mahama after a helicopter crash in which some government officials lost their lives on Wednesday.

In the same vein, Atiku Abubakar, the former vice president of Nigeria and Peter Obi, the 2023 presidential candidate of the Labour Party, have extended their condolences to the people of the government of Ghana over the helicopter crash.

Moment a helicopter crashed behind restaurant

Legit.ng earlier reported that a red helicopter crash-landed behind a waterfront restaurant in Clay Township, Michigan, shocking diners and nearby boaters on Sunday.

Captured in a TikTok video, the aircraft was seen flipping violently after a failed landing attempt near Cabana Blue.

No injuries were confirmed, but the number of passengers and the cause of the crash remain unknown.
