  • Name: Aliko Dangote
  • Birthdate: April 10, 1957
  • Birthplace: Kano, Nigeria
  • Occupation: Businessman

Aliko Dangote was born on April 10, 1957, in Kano, Nigeria, into a prominent Hausa Muslim family. His parents were Mariya Sanusi Dantata and Mohammed Dangote.

Dangote's maternal ancestors were prosperous caravan traders under British colonial rule, and his grandfather, Alhaji Sanusi Dantata, was a notable commodities trader.

His grandfather played a significant role in his upbringing and inspired his entrepreneurial spirit. At the age of eight, Dangote used pocket money given to him by his grandfather to buy sweets, which he had others sell for a profit. He was raised in the Islamic faith and is a practising Muslim.

Education

Dangote pursued business studies at Al-Azhar University, an Islamic institution in Cairo, Egypt.

Business ventures

In 1977, after completing his studies, Dangote returned to Nigeria and received a loan from his uncle to start a business. He began trading commodities and business supplies, primarily cement.

By 1981, his firm had achieved significant success, leading him to incorporate other businesses and establish the Dangote Group. The conglomerate expanded its operations to include foodstuffs such as pasta, sugar, salt, and wheat; cement; haulage; and other sectors.

His flagship company, Dangote Cement, has operations in multiple African markets and remains the continent’s largest cement manufacturer.

Dangote has gained global attention for developing the Dangote Refinery, a multibillion-dollar facility that began operations in 2024 and has become the largest single-train oil refinery in the world.

The refinery is expected to significantly reduce Nigeria’s dependence on imported petroleum products while strengthening regional energy security. The company is also pursuing expansion plans that could further increase refining capacity in the coming years.

Philanthropy

Beyond business, Dangote is known for his philanthropy through the Aliko Dangote Foundation, which supports health, education, nutrition, and economic empowerment initiatives across Africa.

His long-term vision is centred on accelerating industrialisation, creating jobs, and promoting economic self-sufficiency across the continent, making him one of Africa’s most transformative business leaders.
