Which Premier League (Or La Liga) Club Should You Support? A New Fan’s Guide

So, you watched the World Cup, picked a few favourite players, argued about football for a month and now you are wondering what happens next. Welcome to club football.

The World Cup was easy: pick a country and pretend you understand the offside rule. Club football is where things get complicated, with 20 Premier League clubs, multiple leagues, Champions League nights and rivalries that can ruin friendships. There is no right club to choose, but once you pick one, you are stuck with them. Here is our slightly biased guide to finding your football identity.

Arsenal: The Champions Who Finally Have Receipts

For years, Arsenal fans had one answer to almost everything: next season. They were young, they were building and they were nearly there. Now they are finally champions, with a title to defend and a 3-0 Community Shield win over Manchester City already giving them something to shout about.

If you like young stars, attractive football and a team that has finally delivered, Arsenal might be for you. Their title defence begins against Coventry at 9:00 pm on Friday. Just remember that Haramball is still available whenever they spend 20 minutes passing the ball around without scoring.

Manchester City: The Post-Pep Support Group

Pep Guardiola is gone, Rodri has moved to Barcelona and Enzo Maresca now inherits one of the most successful teams in English football. City still have the talent to challenge, but this is a very different team from the one we have known.

If you like winning, elite players and tactical football, City remains an obvious choice. Their first test comes against Bournemouth at 2:00 pm on Sunday, and we will finally discover what happens when the club accused of having cheat codes loses the man who wrote them.

Liverpool: The New Era Nobody Asked For

Liverpool have the history, Anfield and one of football’s biggest fanbases. Now they have a new manager in Andoni Iraola and are entering the post-Mohamed Salah era, which is about as major a change as it gets.

Iraola gets little time to settle, with Liverpool travelling to Newcastle at 4:30 pm on Sunday. If you want history, emotion and a club where every match feels like a major occasion, Liverpool might be for you. Just be prepared to hear about 2005, 2019 and 2020.

Manchester United: Welcome to the "We're Back" Club

Manchester United are massive, successful and almost permanently rebuilding. Since Sir Alex Ferguson left, there have been managers, players and several versions of “this is the one”, but the trophy cabinet remains stubbornly quiet.

Michael Carrick now gets the chance to build on last season’s progress. Their first test comes away to Hull City at 12:30 pm on Saturday. If you like huge clubs, huge expectations and a little emotional suffering every weekend, welcome to United.

Chelsea: Football's Most Expensive Group Project

Chelsea have money, young talent, a new manager in Xabi Alonso and enough players to make you wonder whether the squad has its own postcode. They have also spent heavily again, including a huge deal for Morgan Rogers.

The question is whether all that talent can finally become a team that challenges at the top. Chelsea begin with a West London derby away to Fulham at 8:00 pm on Monday. If you like big signings, young players and a club where something is always happening, Chelsea could be your choice. Just do not ask how many players they actually have.

Tottenham: The Redemption Arc

After two seasons in which relegation became a genuine concern, Tottenham have taken a very different approach this summer, spending heavily and bringing in a host of new players. Roberto De Zerbi now has to turn that investment into progress and get Spurs back towards where they believe they belong.

Their first test comes away to Brentford at 5:30 pm on Saturday. If you are an eternal optimist, enjoy attacking football and do not mind uncertainty, Spurs might be your people. You will also need to learn the word Spursy very quickly.

All Premier League games are live on SS Premier League (GOtv Ch. 65, DStv Ch. 203).

What If You Want Something Else?

If the Premier League is not your thing, La liga offers three very different choices. Real Madrid are going all-in after two trophyless seasons since Mbappé arrived, with José Mourinho back, Vinícius Júnior renewed and plenty of pressure to win. If you like big stars, big expectations and bigger drama, Madrid should keep you entertained. They visit Espanyol at 8:30 pm on Saturday.

Barcelona offer the younger alternative, with back-to-back La Liga titles, Lamine Yamal leading a new generation and Rodri adding more quality. They visit Elche at 8:30 pm on Sunday.

Then there is Atlético Madrid, where Diego Simeone, a post-Griezmann rebuild and plenty of chaos await anyone who prefers underdogs. They host Villarreal at 5:00 pm on Sunday. All three matches are live on SS La Liga (GOtv Ch. 62, DStv Ch. 204).

Beyond Spain, PSG are the back-to-back Champions League winners, while Bayern Munich offer history, dominance and a club that expects to compete for trophies every season. PSG face Rennes at 9:00 pm on Sunday, live on SS Africa 1 (GOtv Ch. 63, DStv Ch. 207).
