We Don't Know How Otti is Getting the Money For Projects —Reps Member, Alex Ikwechegh

A member of the House of Representatives, Hon. Alex Mascot Ikwechegh, has described the performance of Abia State Governor, Dr. Alex Otti, as "magical," admitting that even politicians in opposition parties are stunned by the scale and speed of development happening in the state.

Ikwechegh, who represents Aba North and Aba South Federal Constituency under the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), made the statement during a television appearance on African Independent Television’s Jigsaw programme, monitored by IgbereTV.

While commending the governor's achievements in infrastructure, healthcare, and commerce, the lawmaker confessed that many—including himself—remain puzzled about how the state is funding such ambitious projects.

> “To be honest, we don’t know how Governor Otti is getting the money to do what he’s doing. But whatever he’s doing, it’s working,” Ikwechegh said during the interview.

He praised the Labour Party governor for rehabilitating roads that had been in disrepair since the 1970s, especially those leading into Aba, a major commercial hub in southeastern Nigeria.

> “There are roads that were bad before I was born—some from the 70s—that no government dared to touch. In just two years, Dr. Alex Otti has done magic,” he said.

The federal lawmaker went on to cite visible improvements in markets such as Ariaria, which he said now features modern buildings equipped with elevators—something previously unimaginable in the area.

> “I saw a video of a seven-storey building with working lifts in Ariaria market. I said to myself, ‘This can’t be real,’” he added.

Ikwechegh, a known critic of misgovernance, revealed that even lawmakers from the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) acknowledge Otti’s performance privately, despite political differences.

He further hinted at the possibility of switching parties if the Labour Party resolves its internal issues, saying, “It would be preposterous for any Abian not to support what Otti is doing—either directly or indirectly.”

Beyond roads and markets, the lawmaker praised the turnaround in Abia’s healthcare system, noting that hospitals now function with better equipment, staff morale, and regular power supply.

Describing Otti’s leadership style as “technocratic,” Ikwechegh attributed the governor’s success to his private sector background as a top banking executive.

> “He understands governance like very few do. He’s not just another politician—he’s a competent administrator, and that’s rare in Nigeria,” he noted.
