Nigerian defender Leon Balogun has been rewarded with a one-year contract extension by Rangers until the summer of 2022.

The 32-year-old's initial deal by the end of this season but his performances earned him another year at the Ibrox Stadium.

Balogun has made 28 appearances for The Gers so far this campaign playing as a right-back and a centre-back under Liverpool legend Steven Gerard.

While he has no goal to his credit, the Super Eagles defender has assisted three goals after 19 league games and could increase the tally before the end of the term.

The former Premier League star is also instrumental to The Teddy Bears winning the Scottish League for the first time in 10 years.

Gerard's men ran away with the trophy as they currently gap Celtic - the second-place team with 20 points after 33 games.

Meanwhile, the champions welcome Hibernian to the Ibrox Stadium on Sunday, April 11 to further consolidate their position on the log.

Balogun spent most of his early career playing for German clubs like Hannover, Werder Bremen, Fortuna Düsseldorf, Darmstadt 98 and Mainz 05 before moving to England in 2018. He was also part of Gernot Rohr's team that won bronze medal at the 2019 AFCON championship in Egypt.

Legit.ng earlier reported that Nigerian international Joe Aribo has been named in the Scottish Premier League team of the season.

The 24-year-old midfielder is among the generation of players who helped Rangers win the league title for the first time in a decade.

So far this campaign, he has scored six goals in 25 topflight appearances and could add to the tally before the end of the season. He has also created four assists after the same number of outings.
