Breaking: DSS finally releases Ganduje's sacked aide Salihu Yakasai

- Governor Ganduje's former media aide, Salihu Tanko-Yakasai, has been freed by the DSS

Salihu Tanko-Yakasai, a former spokesman to the governor of Kano state, Abdullahi Ganduje, has been released by the Department of State Service (DSS) has freed.

Daily Nigerian reports that Tanko-Yakasai’s elder brother, Umar, confirmed the development on the night, Monday, March 1.

Legit.ng gathered that the DSS admitted on Saturday, February 27, that Tanko-Yakasai was in their custody after a mounting social media storm over the arrest.

Umar said:

“My brother has just been released by DSS. We are now driving home."

The Kano state director of the service, Alhassan Mohammed, earlier on the morning Saturday, February 27, denied arresting Tanko-Yakasai, describing the report as mere rumour.

But a spokesman for the service, Peter Afunanya, later confirmed the general belief that the social media influencer was arrested by the service.

In the wake of the arrest, Ganduje announced his sack over “unguarded utterances” and criticism against the ruling APC.

Meanwhile, Legit.ng had previously reported that the DSS confirmed the arrest and detainment of Salihu Tanko Yakasai by its operatives.

It was reported that the secret police officially confirmed the reports that had been making the rounds in a statement it released on Sunday, February 28.

The statement, which was signed by DSS' spokesperson, Peter Afunnanya, said Yakasai was arrested for more than expressing his personal opinion about the government.

In a related report, Saliu was arrested by the DSS some hours after he criticised President Muhammadu Buhari.

Yakasai had in a series of tweets on Friday, February 26, in reaction to the abduction of about 317 female students of Government Girls Secondary School in Jangebe, Zamfara state, said the kidnappings had become too frequent.

He accused the All Progressives Congress government of failing at all levels. Yakasai was subsequently sacked for making a statement deemed critical of the Buhari administration.
