Elections: Observer groups laud Nigerian Army’s conduct in southeast

Samuel Onoja, the coordinator of the 2019 general elections local observer groups in Enugu state, has lauded the good conduct of the Nigerian Army in the southeast during the governorship and state assembly elections in the zone.

News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the southeast is under the Area of Responsibility (AR) of the 82 Division of the Nigerian Army, popularly known as “The Dragons’’.

Onoja told NAN in Enugu on Monday, March 11, that there was no unpleasant report concerning soldiers deployed to assist other sister-security agencies in keeping the peace, describing the army operatives as exemplary in their conduct during the polls.

He said that the army personnel deployed for the elections in Enugu state exhibited a high sense of discipline. He said that they were not only well behaved but discharged their mandate diligently in the state, where he supervised.

Onoja, who is a member of Global Development Centre on Rescue Mission in Nigeria, said that the southeast was generally peaceful and calm during the polls.

He said: “The security in the south-east, especially Enugu state, was okay and the whole area was quiet and calm during the polls."

He said that the general peaceful atmosphere experienced in the zone could not have been possible, if not for the dutifulness of the security agencies, especially the Nigerian Army.

NAN recalls that the general officer commanding, 82 Division, Majajor-Gen. Abubakar Maikobi, had warned that any operative reported or caught engaging in unprofessional conduct during the elections would be dealt with according to military rules.

Meanwhile, Legit.ng previously reported that the Nigerian Army has refuted the allegation that it was its men perpetrating series of killings during the governorship and House of Assembly election across the country.

In a statement released by the force in a counter reaction to the reports of its alleged politicization, the Nigerian Army acting director of pubic relation Colonel Sagir Musa, said the growing insinuation that the force was responsible for killing during polls was not true.
