Yussuf Poulsen scores as Denmark claim important win over Peru

Denmark claimed their first victory at the ongoing 2018 FIFA World Cup competition on Saturday, June 16, at the Mordovia Arena after beating Peru 1-0 in the second Group C clash.

Yussuf Poulsen's 59th minute strike ensured the Danish national team got their campaign off to a winning start to rank second on the group table but with the same points as France.

The RB Leipzig striker got a well-timed superb pass from Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Christian Eriksen and narrowly placed the ball into the left side of the goal post.

Although, the south American team tried to respond immediately and get an equaliser, but an excellent last gasp save from Leicester City shot stopper saved the ball from going into the net.

Coach Aage Hareide's men threatened all through the game to punish their opponents but their final balls were either stopped by the goalkeeper or went inches wide from the post.

Peru had a penalty call late into the first half but the Gambian referee Bakary Papa Gassama turned away from the incident.

However, the Video Assistant Referee came to the rescue as the initial penalty call that was overlooked was then awarded, only for Christian Cueva to waste the glorious chance.

Denmark's star man Christian Eriksen wasn't really given any chance to cause major damage to his opponent but his timely pass empowered his teammate to get the only goal that handed them all three points in the meeting.

Peru, who are making their return to the global football showpiece after a long while didn't give up their chance to get an equaliser in that encounter but they were just too unlucky to find the back of the net.

As it stands now on Group C table, France are the group leaders after the first round of games as they defeated Australia 2-1 earlier in the day.

While Denmark are closely following their French opposition on the second position, as Australia and Peru rank 3rd and 4th respectively.

The Danish team will battle Australia in their next group game while France square up with Peru on June 21.

Meanwhile, both the first and the second teams on the log will be aiming for another win to secure their spots in the next round of the competition.
