In her story, the lady, identified as Amelie, said she and her family were suddenly told they couldn't remain in the US.

She said:

"The Trump administration was like we are gonna give you guys two months so you can prepare to leave. My issue is not that you are telling me I need to leave. I don't care, I will leave, because honestly, it's worth the headaches. My thing is that they did not give us the proper time to let us know that 'we are cancelling'. They didn't do that. I had actually ended up getting a new job, my highest paying job ever in LA. I was getting paid $60,000. That's nothing, but it was something to me."

She had moved to Cameroon, and she documented her journey in a series of videos that went viral on TikTok.

Now, Amelie shared a new video, saying the US government has paid her $1000 for voluntarily leaving the country.

She said:

"Yes, I got my cash. Yes, it took them forever. My ties to the US is officially severed…for now."

The policy to pay people who are self-deporting was announced by the US Department of Homeland Security on May 5, the BBC reports.

The announcement reads:

"Today, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) announced a historic opportunity for illegal aliens to receive both financial and travel assistance to facilitate travel back to their home country through the CBP Home App. Any illegal alien who uses the CBP Home App to self-deport will also receive a stipend of $1,000 dollars, paid after their return to their home country has been confirmed through the app."

The government described self-deportation as a dignified way of leaving the US.

It says:

"Self-deportation is a dignified way to leave the U.S. and will allow illegal aliens to avoid being encountered by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). Even with the cost of the stipend, it is projected that the use of CBP Home will decrease the costs of a deportation by around 70 percent. Currently the average cost to arrest, detain, and remove an illegal alien is $17,121."
