Jaywon Tackles Billboard Over Best Afrobeats Songs List, Makes Bold Claim

  • Singer Jaywon insisted that his 2012 anthem This Year has had more cultural impact than some Billboard-listed tracks
  • The Odun Yi crooner noted that both gospel and Afrobeats artists still copy the song’s unique vibe
  • Fans debated online as Billboard ranks 2Face, Wizkid, Rema, Flavour, and CKay in the top five Afrobeats songs of all time

The recently released Billboard’s “Top 50 Best Afrobeats Songs of All Time” list has continued to gather dust, with notable Nigerian artists coming out to make their reservations

The latest to call out the platform is singer Iledare Oluwajuwonlo, popularly known as Jaywon, who is frustrated that his 2012 hit song This Year was left out.

Legit.ng recalled that another singer, Terry G, had also expressed his grievances that none of his songs made the cut.

He reminded fans that since its release in 2012, This Year has become a soundtrack for celebrations, New Year crossovers, weddings, and even church vigils.

He wrote:

“‘This Year’ by Jaywon had more viral moments and cultural impact than some of the tracks Billboard ranked. It has been trending since 2012 and is still relevant today. Who else has achieved that? Hate is inevitable. Year after year, both gospel and Afrobeats singers copy the same vibe, but we remain unshaken. I’ll say it again no song on that list has more cultural impact than #ThisYear by Jaywon.”

Billboard had listed 2Face Idibia’s evergreen love ballad African Queen at number one, followed closely by Wizkid’s Ojuelegba, Flavour’s Nwa Baby, Rema’s Calm Down, and CKay’s Love Nwantiti.

Jaywon tackles fan over Ayra Starr's dressing

Legit.ng earlier reported that Jaywon has set social media abuzz after reacting to an X user's post about a recent photo of Afrobeats sensation Ayra Starr.

The image, which shows Ayra Starr in a bold blue and orange lingerie-style top, was shared by an X user who tagged Jaywon, seeking his thoughts on the picture.

In response, Jaywon remarked that many interpreted it as a subtle critique of her choice of outfit. He dropped a rhetorical question, asking if Ayra Starr did not have a father or mother in her life.
