One of the motorists was said to have been shot while driving an unmarked security vehicle at Orji, on Owerri-Okigwe road very close to the Orji Divisional Police Headquarters.
The incident was said to have caused an abrupt end to commercial activities within the area as people, including those drinking at nearby bars scampered for safety to avoid being shot by the suspected armed robbers.
The commissioner was said to have been riding with another aide of the governor, Dominic Uzowuru, to his home in Orji, when the incident occurred.
When contacted, the spokesman of the Imo state police command, Mr. Orlando Ikeokwu, confirmed the attack on the government officials.
Recall that the residence of Governor Hope Uzodinma in Omuma, Oru East Local government area, was on Saturday, April 24, attacked by unknown gunmen who also succeeded in killing some security operatives attached to the governor's mansion.
The invaders had a gun battle with the operatives, set fire on the edifice, and destroyed vehicles parked inside the compound.
Meanwhile, the Nigeria Governors Forum (NGF) on Sunday, April 25, reacted to the attack on Governor Uzodinma's country home.
The NGF said the assailants constitute a small league of persons trying to harm the corporate existence of Nigeria, adding that the perpetrators took criminality too far.
