- An APC chieftain from the north, Abubakar Girei, has backed the southwest to produce Nigeria's president in 2023
- Girei said giving the ticket to VP Osinbajo and making Borno governor his running mate will hand the APC victory in the next elections
- The APC chieftain explained that southwest's role in President Buhari's electoral victory is the reason he is backing the zone
Abubakar Girei, a chieftain of the All Progressive Congress (APC), has recommended Yemi Osinbajo-Babagana Zulum 2023 presidential ticket, saying the combination will ensure victory for the ruling party.
Daily Sun reports that the Adamawa politician and former senator said if the APC will zone its presidential slot to the south, it would be proper to consider giving the ticket to the serving vice president to consolidate on the successes of President Muhammadu Buhari.
Girei added that choosing the governor of Borno state as Osinbajo's running mate will help the party to stay in power beyond 2023.
Legit.ng gathers that the APC chieftain made this known on Monday, January 4, in Kaduna state.
The former senator advised the leadership of the APC to avoid a costly mistake in the choice of a presidential candidate and running mate.
Though he said the agitation for a power shift to the southeast is in order, the APC chieftain argued that it is morally right to give it to the southwest because of the support the zone gave to President Buhari in the last election.
Nevertheless, the APC the chieftain said the most deserving of the presidency in 2023 is the northeast followed by the southeast as they have not produced the nation's president before.
He explained that the reason why he supports the southwest is because of a gentlemen's agreement and the role the zone played in the emergence of Buhari as Nigeria's president.
Meanwhile, in another report, Professor Usman Yusuf, a popular northern leader, made a prediction about the next general elections in Nigeria.
Yusuf, who was a former executive secretary of the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS), said politicians preparing for the 2023 election are living on false hope.
Legit.ng gathered that the northern leader emphasised that the 2023 general elections would never hold, especially in the north, given the level of insecurity in the country.
