Breaking: Supreme Court dismisses APC’s appeal on Rivers primaries

The Supreme Court has confirmed that the All Progressives Congress will not have candidates in Rivers state during the forthcoming 2019 general elections.

Reports by Channel TV claimed that the court dismissed an appeal filed by the APC challenging the judgment of a high court in Port Harcourt.

The court earlier barred the party from conducting any primaries in the state to nominate candidates to represent the party in the elections.

Meanwhile, Legit.ng had reported that few days to the forthcoming general elections, the Independent National Electoral Commission insisted that the APC in Rivers state has no candidates for the polls.

The Court of Appeal had earlier granted stay of execution of the lower court's judgement nullifying all primaries of the APC in the state and restrained the INEC from fielding the party's candidates in the forthcoming general elections.

The INEC national commissioner and chairman, voter education and publicity, Festus Okoye, said the commission had taken a position.

Okoye, at an interactive meeting with reporters in Abuja, revealed that the position of the commission has not changed in respect of Rivers state APC candidates for the National Assembly and governorship elections.

In a related development, the Rivers state chapter of the APC asked the INEC to postpone elections in the state.

The APC in Rivers had been disqualified by the electoral commission, from taking part in the elections in the state, over the crisis which affected the party’s primaries.

Following the crisis, two factions of the part emerged in the state; one led by the minister of transportation, Rotimi Amaechi, and the other led by Senator Magnus Abe.
