Targeted operation leads to arrests
According to the police, detectives attached to the Zonal Intelligence Department (ZID) acted on credible intelligence received on 7 January 2026. A precision operation in the Lekki−Ajah axis of Lagos led to the apprehension of Tega Emmanuel (24), Jacob Olatunde (33) and Gift Okubakpere (36).
“Tega Emmanuel was intercepted along Chevron Drive while driving a Porsche vehicle. He confessed to his involvement in cybercrime activities,” DSP Afolayan Gbenga, Police Public Relations Officer for Zone 2, said.
Subsequent searches of Emmanuel’s residence led to the arrest of Olatunde and Okubakpere.
Suspects confess roles in coordinated cybercrime
During interrogation, the suspects admitted to their roles in the operation. Emmanuel coordinated cyber fraud, romance scams, and the creation of fraudulent accounts.
Olatunde managed financial transactions and collection of illicit funds, while Okubakpere handled cryptocurrency-related scams via Facebook, WhatsApp, Telegram, online banking platforms, and crypto exchanges.
Exhibits recovered from suspects
Police also recovered numerous items linked to the alleged crimes, including three HP laptops, an Apple MacBook, two MacBook tablets, nine iPhones, six international passports, Lagos State vehicle number plates, three dealer plate numbers, military camouflage, a mini printer, a toy gun reportedly used for skit production, 98 suspected counterfeit $100 US notes, and illicit drugs suspected to be Indian hemp along with smoking paraphernalia.
Investigations have been extended to relevant agencies to verify the status of the suspected counterfeit currency and illicit drugs.
Police reaffirm commitment to fight crime
The Assistant Inspector-General of Police assured the public that the suspects would be prosecuted once investigations conclude.
“Efforts are ongoing to apprehend other members of the syndicate. Zone 2 Headquarters remains committed to sustaining the fight against fraud-related offences across Lagos and Ogun States,” DSP Gbenga added.
