Unknown Gunmen Kill 9 Persons, Several Cows in Anambra State

- The police in Anambra says nine persons and 23 cows have been killed in the state by unknown armed men

- The incident occurred in Oyi local government area of the state close to a state-owned university

- Students around the area have moved out of their hostels for fear of reprisals

Vanguard is reporting that unknown gunmen have killed nine persons and about 23 cows in Anambra state.

According to the report, the incident took place at an area known as Modiyam Umaru camp in Awkuzu, Oyi local government area of the state.

The area is also said to be a stone throw to many hostels housing students of the state-owned Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University.

The incident was confirmed by the spokesman of the Anambra state police command, Mr. Ikenga Tochukwu.

Following the development, tension has heightened in the entire Awkuzu and Igbariam communities, with many students and other residents already packing out of the area for fear of being caught in the web of a potential battle.

Part of a statement released by the Anambra police command read:

“The commissioner has ordered the immediate deployment of the command’s operational and intelligence assets to identify and apprehend the unknown armed men, who violently attacked Ukpomachi Village, Awkuzu in Oyi LGA of the state in the early hours of 26th, April 2021.
“Meanwhile, a crack team of police operatives of the command led by an Assistant Commissioner of Police had visited the scene and conducted on- the- spot-assessment of the incident In the meantime, the command has successfully restored normalcy in the area.”

Daily Trust quoted the chairman, Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria, southeast zone, Alhaji Gidado Sidikki, as saying the incident happened at 2 am on Monday, April 26 at Modiyam Umaru camp where he said herdsmen have been living for many years.

He further said children were not spared by the assailants.

The incident comes almost a month after armed gunmen attacked the former governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Prof. Charles Soludo, killing three policemen guarding him.

The incident took place in Soludo's community, Isuofia, in Aguata local government area of Anambra state during a meeting with the youths of the community.

Speaking on the attack, the former CBN governor said it lasted for more than 10 minutes, describing it as senseless.

The gubernatorial aspirant under the All Progressives Grand Alliance in the forthcoming Anambra governorship election, made the revelation on Thursday, April 1, while speaking to Channels Television.
