- Vice President Osinbajo has decorated Usman Alkali as Nigeria's new IGP
- During the decoration, the vice president revealed why his principal, Buhari, appointed Alkali as the nation's police chief
- According to the VP, seniority and competence were the sole factors considered in making Alkali the acting IGP
Nigeria's vice president, Yemi Osinbajo, says President Muhammadu Buhari appointed Usman Alkali as the Acting Inspector General of Police (IGP) because he is the most senior among those qualified to hold the position.
The vice president was quoted to have said:
“Your selection by Mr President follows a rigorous process where all eligible Deputy Inspectors-General of Police and Assistant Inspectors-General of police were considered. The president then appointed you as the most senior qualified and eligible officer."
Legit.ng gathers that Osinbajo noted that the process of appointing Alkali was a departure from the past when the selection of the new IGP often meant the immediate retirement of a cohort of senior police officers whose vast experience and training would no longer be available to the country.
The vice president noted that Alkali will have access to many experienced senior officers to work with in his new role as the nation's police chief.
“This appointment, which is largely on the basis of seniority and competence, will ensure that you have access to professional and experienced officers to support you in your new role."
Many Nigerians on social media have reacted to the vice president's statement. Legit.ng collects some of the reactions below:
Theophilus Kumun said on Facebook:
"We know that it has to be a northerner. Such a bias president."
Kelechukwu Chukwunedum Okpara commented:
"Oga Osibanjo, don't say what you don't know,,, they arranged everything at your back, please don't say anything about this. thank you for your understanding."
Alabi Benjamin said:
"The deal has been done. U owe nobody an explanation. We move"
