JUST IN: Ibrahim Idris officially hands over to IGP Adamu

The outgoing Inspector General of Police (IGP), Ibrahim Idris, has officially handed over to his successor, Mohammed Abubakar Adamu.

The official handover was held at the police headquarters, Abuja at a brief ceremony on Wednesday, January 16.

Adamu's appointment means he is the 20th indigenous IGP Nigeria has had.

Idris in a short remark, thanked all the personnel of the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) nationwide for their support for him during his tenure.

Speaking at the event, the new IGP said: “My appointment represents a call to duty and a charge to restore the dwindling primacy of the Nigeria Police Force within the internal security architecture of our beloved country.

“Commanding the largest police force in Africa, particularly at this crucial time that the country is faced with multi-faceted security challenges and at the peak or preparations for the general elections, is undoubtedly an arduous task.

“I assure this day that I will provide the highest possible level of professional and responsible leadership for you while trusting that you shall march hand-in-hand with me as dependable professional colleagues to advance the fortunes of the force.”

The new IGP also hailed Idris for his successes during his tenure and wished him well in his future endeavours.

The short ceremony was attended by senior officers of the NPF and dozens of journalists in the Nigerian capital.

Meanwhile, Legit.ng previously reported that the IGP said he will restrategise to tackle the problem of insecurity in the country.

IGP Adamu who spoke shortly after his meeting with President Muhammadu Buhari and his predecessor in Abuja on Tuesday, January 15, said he would stick by the rules in directing the affairs of the nation.

On the 2019 elections, the new police chief assured that it will be free and fair and that the right things will be done.
