“I’ve certainly got to have a conversation with the manager in the next month or so about the future.

“But if it is the last game, I can finish my England career knowing I have played every possible game I could play.

“I’ve never pulled out with a half-injury or put my club before my country.

“I will have played as many games as possible over the past seven or eight years.

“Coming into this tournament I felt proud of what I’d won trophy-wise but the one thing missing was a good experience with the national team in a tournament.

“Yes, we’d won big games and I’d scored some goals but I’d never come away from a tournament thinking ‘that was good’, for obvious reasons.

“When you crash out it is a real low, but this feels a mix, half a low but half of something else. I had a good experience with a great bunch of lads, some really quality players,” Cahill said.

The big defender’s body language did not reveal any negativity after England’s exit from the Mundial.

“They should be proud of themselves.

“This is a young squad that’s come and made the nation proud and given a good account of ourselves.

“We played free of nerves. I’ve not played too much but I saw them moving the ball, showing composure through the tournament. Each and every one of them should be proud of themselves.

“Over the years we had some phenomenal, world-class players, who won at club level and couldn’t come together the same way in an England shirt.

“Everybody would agree that it came together here. We just fell short at the penultimate hurdle.

“But as a team we should be proud. For me, looking at such a young squad, I just feel positive about the future.

“If - and it’s always a big if - we keep this squad to let them grow and progress, continue what I’ve seen in the 50-odd days we’ve been together, it’s just a matter of time until they can get their hands on some silverware,” Cahill submitted.
