More trouble as minister Fayemi is summoned by Ekiti commission of inquiry

- His invitation came despite various court cases he instituted against the commission

Nigeria’s solid minerals development minister, Kayode Fayemi, has again been summoned by the Judicial Commission of Inquiry set up by the government of Ayodele Fayose to probe alleged fraud committed under the immediate past administration in the state.

Kayode Fayemi was the governor during this period under review. The commission is to start its hearing on Monday, August 28, at the state high court premises in Ado Ekiti.

Fayemi's invitation is despite the court cases he reportedly instituted to stop the commission from investigating him.

Premium Times reports that a statement by the commission’s secretary, Gbenga Adaramola, said Fayemi, is to appear before it on September 6.

The report mentioned other former top officials to appear to include: ex-commissioner of finance, Dapo Kolawole, the executive-secretary of the Universal Basic Education Commission, the Ado-Ekiti branch manager of Access Bank; managing director of Coscharis Motors Limited; Tijani-Yuyang Construction Eng Ltd; CASA Nig Ltd; and the managing director of SCOA Nigeria Limited.

“Consequent upon the inauguration of the Judicial Commission of Inquiry into the finances of Ekiti state between 2010 and 2014 by the government, the commission will commence the public hearing and the witnesses would be called, examined and/or cross-examined as indicated hereunder,” Adaramola’s statement read.

On August 28, those to appear before the commission are witnesses from the accountant-general’s office and the ministry of finance.

It added that witnesses from the ministry of budget and planning; General Administration and Department (GAD), ministry of local government and chieftaincy affairs and the managing director of Coscharis Motors Ltd would be called on August 30.

For Dapo Kolawole, SCOA Nig Ltd, Citadel Nominees Limited/Toyab Associates Joint Consultants, CASA Nig Ltd, and the Director General of the Security and Exchange Commission, they are expected to appear on September 6 with the minister.

Headed by retired judge, Silas Oyewole, the commission is to “look into the financial transactions of Ekiti state between 2010 and 2014; ascertain the amount received on behalf of the state from the Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC); investigate the allegations of fraud/loss of funds, including the diversion and conversion of the UBEC funds.”

It is also expected to ascertain the amount that the Ekiti government took as loans during the period under review and how this was spent.
