Nigerian Army battles IPOB's security network in Imo forest, gives reason for military operation

A joint military operation by the Nigerian Army, Nigerian Air Force (NAF), and the police have been launched against suspected members of the Eastern Security Network (ESN) set up by the Indigenous Peoples of Biafra (IPOB) in Imo state.

This Day reported that the 34 Artillery Brigade of the Nigerian Army in Obinze confirmed that the offensive was being carried out in Orsu local government area of the state and its neighbouring communities.

A spokesperson for the brigade, Lieutenant Babatunde Zubairu, told the publication that the operation was launched following an intelligence report of the IPOB security network had established illegal camps in some areas.

He stated that the military stormed the area to raid these illegal camps.

Zubairu explained that the operation would have no effect on civilians and residents of the area because it being conducted inside bushes and forests where the camps are located.

He said the exercise is targeted at hoodlums and not law-abiding citizens.

Meanwhile, Ohanaeze Youth Council (OYC), the youth wing of the apex Igbo socio-cultural organization, Ohanaeze Ndigbo, has spoken on the presence of military men in Orlu town in Imo state. PR Nigeria reports that the OYC's national president, Igboayaka O.

Igboayaka described as entirely false and misleading some media reports of a military bombardment and killing of inhabitants in Orlu town.

Legit.ng gathers that the OYC president made this known in a statement signed by his media aide, Chukwuemeka Chimerue.

In another news, a civil society organisation, Save Humanity Advocacy Centre (SHAC) on Monday, February 15, called the attention of foreign missions to plots by members of the IPOB to blackmail the immediate past service chiefs.

The group said the IPOB members disgruntled over the nomination of the service chiefs as non-career ambassadors by President Muhammadu Buhari plans to scuttle their confirmation by the Senate.
