Egypt crashed out of the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations championship at the round of 16 stage following their 1-0 defeat to South Africa at the Cairo International Stadium on Saturday.

With Orlando Pirates' star Thembinkosi Lorch scoring the only goal that separated the two sides after 90 minutes of intense action.

However, the Egyptian football association president Hany Abou-Rida has fired coach Javier Aguirre barely one year after being appointed as reported by Kingfut.com.

He took charge of 12 matches across competitions - winning nine games, while two ended in defeats and the last, draw since his appointment in August 2018.

His team were able to score 25 goals and conceded just seven during his short reign as the coach of the Pharaohs.

Aguirre signed a four year deal which will earn him a sum of $120,000 a month salary but that came to an abrupt end after his side's ouster from the continental championship.

The 65-year-old football administrator also stepped down from his position following the disappointing defeat on home soil.

Coach Staurt Baxter's men were impressive all through their knockout stage game against the Pharaohs before eventually breaking the deadlock with five minutes to wrap the game up.

The publication also report that a number of board members, including Hazem Emam and Ahmed Megahed followed the step of their president as they resigned from their positions.

Meanwhile, Abou-Rida will maintain his status as the head of the organizing committee of the 2019 AFCON despite of his resignation as the head of the country's football body.

Legit.ng earlier reported that Liverpool superstar Mohamed Salah was full of tears after failing to help Egypt reach the quarterfinals of the ongoing Africa Cup of Nations championship on home soil.

The Pharaohs were sent out of the competition by South Africa, thanks to Thembinkosi Lorch perfect finish in the 85th minute of the encounter.

It was a superb and precise pass from Lebo Mothiba after a timely counter-attacking move that ensured coach Stuart Baxter's men claim the much needed victory over the hosts.
