Gerrard, who had a sparkling career with Liverpool and the English national team, joined Scottish side rangers in 2018. He earlier worked as an academy coach at Liverpool.

Confirming the appointment, Gerrard said via the club website:

“Aston Villa is a club with a rich history and tradition in English football and I am immensely proud to become its new head coach.
“In my conversations with Nassef, Wes and the rest of the Board, it was apparent how ambitious their plans are for the club and I am looking forward to helping them achieve their aims.
“I would like to express my sincere gratitude to everybody associated with Glasgow Rangers for giving me the opportunity to manage such an iconic football club.
“Helping them secure a record-breaking 55th league title will always hold a special place in my heart. I would like to wish the players, staff and supporters the very best for the future.”

Lampard earlier linked with Aston Villa job

Meanwhile, Frank Lampard's uncle and legendary manager Harry Redknapp revealed the Chelsea legend would be interested in taking over at Aston Villa should the opportunity arise.

The Premier League has been marked with a string of sackings in recent weeks with Villa among the clubs who have shown their manager the door.

While Rangers boss Steven Gerrard is believed to be the favourite to succeed Dean Smith at Villa Park, it has emerged Lampard was also eyeing the job.

Guardiola claims City will lose players to Barcelona

Meanwhile, Legit.ng earlier reported that Pep Guardiola is wary of the fact that Xavi Henandez's appointment as coach of Barcelona would rub off on his team.

Raheem Sterling has been linked with a move to the Camp Nou outfit after the Englishman says we would welcome a move out of the Etihad.

Xavi will be looking to add to his squad to help rebuild their poor start to the new campaign and Sterling would be an ideal player to fit into Barca's 4-3-3 formation.
