The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has announced that the teams qualified for the World Cup playoffs will know their opponents on January 26, Complete Sports reports.

Super Eagles of Nigeria sealed their spot in the final round of the qualifiers after seeing off Cape Verde following a 1-1 draw in Lagos, to top their group.

CAF held a general congress and reached a decision that the draws for the two-legged playoff matches will take place on January 26, 2022.

All ten group winners from the second round of the qualifiers will take on each other in a home and away tie and the five winners will emerge Africa’s representatives at the Mundial.

Initially, the draw was slated for December 18, but it has now been moved forward to allow the continental body prepare.

As opposed to the November FIFA rankings, that of January will be used to determine the seeded teams according to reports.

At the moment, the Super Eagles are ranked fifth best team on the continent and the new decision will see them know their World Cup playoff opponent during the AFCON tournament.

Eagles could play home game outside Nigeria

Soccernet are reporting that the Eagles could be playing their home game outside Nigeria after CAF stated that VAR will be used.

The African football governing body added that any country that does not have VAR facilities installed would be forced to play its home game at an away ground that has the facility.

Nigeria have played all their matches this year at the Teslim Balogun Stadium in Lagos, but the facility is not equipped with VAR technology.

CAF backs FIFA’s two-year World Cup idea
