Rohr who is the coach of the Super Eagles of Nigeria has expressed happiness for his side's win over Benin Republic in the 2022 African Cup of Nations qualifiers played on Saturday, March 27.

The encounter saw the Super Eagles ending Benin Republic's eight-year unbeaten run coming to an end as Paul Onuachu's goal gave the three-time African champions the win.

Super Eagles have also qualified for the 2022 African Cup of Nations championship in Cameroon even though they have one game left to play in the qualifiers against Lesotho.

According to the report on Complete Sports, Gernot Rohr described the win over Benin Republic as a perfect one which will boost the morale of his players ahead of next tie.

Last year, the German tactician and his wards failed to get a win in all their games, but they have now started 2022 in a remarkable fashion.

“It was a sweet victory. It really feels good to finally end Benin’s eight-year unbeaten record at home.
” Even when the goal refused to come, my players remained calm because we already knew the result of the game between Lesotho and Sierra Leone. We had also already qualified for the AFCON.”

Earlier, Legit.ng had reported how Super Eagles striker Paul Onuachu thanked Nigerians following his late strike that sunk the Squirrels of Benin right in their backyard in Porto-Novo.

The Super Eagles of Nigeria have qualified for the AFCON 2021 showpiece in Cameroon as Onuachu headed home a rebound after a goal-mouth scramble to help his side win 1-0 away from home.

Nigerians had blasted Super Eagles coach Gernot Rohr for failing to include the Genk striker in the squad despite him scoring 27 goals so far for his club this season.

However, following COVID-19 restrictions which put the availability of some players as uncertain, Rohr finally invited Onuachu for the matches, and he responded well scoring the lone goal in Porto-Novo.

Meanwhile, Alex Iwobi has tested positive for coronavirus and will out of final qualifying encounter against Lesotho on Tuesday, March 30.
