Samuel Okwaraji: Mother of late Super Eagles star Janet dies in Enugu

- Samuel Okwaraji’s aged mother Janet has reportedly died in Enugu

- It was gathered that she had been battling an unknown ailment since the death of her son

Janet Okwaraji, the mother of late Nigerian international Samuel Okwaraji, has died at the age of 83 according to latest reports.

The announcement was made on Sunday, June 7, by her son Patrick and was also confirmed by Ekwem Bizmark who claims she was his aunty.

ABN TV reports that Mrs Janet died at her Abakpa Nike Enugu home, after she recently complained of neglect against her and her family by the government, particularly the Enugu and Imo states governments.

According to the Nigeria Football Federation, the family of former Nigeria international player formally notified the football house of the passing of the matriarch of the family, Mrs Jane Okwaraji, who died on Saturday, 23rd May 2020.

Patrick Okwaraji, brother to the former player, signed the letter which informed the NFF and the Nigerian Football family of the death of the 83 –year old retired school teacher.

In the letter, the Okwaraji family disclosed that Mrs Jane Okwaraji, also a community leader and devout Christian, passed on to the great beyond after a brief illness.

Although the cause of her death is yet to be determined, it may not be unconnected with old-age related illnesses.

Recall that her late son Samuel Okwaraji who played for the Nigerian national team collapsed and died of congestive heart failure in the 77th minute of a World Cup qualification match against Angola at the National Stadium in Surulere, Lagos on August 12, 1989 at the age of 25.

The late footballer was born on May 19, 1964 in Orlu, Imo state, he was a qualified lawyer who had a Masters in International Law from the University of Rome, Italy.

This is coming less than one month that the Federal Ministry of Sports and Youth development under Minister Sunday Dare extended his hands of generosity by sending food items and cash of N50,000 to her.

It comes days after mother of late Rashidi Yekini got the same amount of money from the Ministry of Sports in which she was also placed on N10,000 monthly as stipend.

There had been news that Samuel Okwaraji's mother has been down since the shocking death of her son 31 years year ago and she has not yet recover from the shock of losing her son.

Many Nigerians are still battling to cope with the pains his death brought to football fraternities. Representing the Minister in Enugu, Bamidele Ajayi delivered the food items to the father of the deceased with the cash.

Legit.ng earlier reported that the Nigerian Athletics Federation and even sports families in general have been thrown into mourning following the death of coach Uruemu Adu.

According to the official statement by the body, coach Uruemu Adu died on Sunday, May 10, after complaining of headache at his house in Lagos.

His untimely death came as a shock to all sporting fraternities in Nigeria considering the number of athletes the coach has discovered before his demise.
