Officials of the Shoe Dealers Association, Jos, have accused officers of the Nigeria Customs Service of harassment and extortion while carrying out their legal business, calling on the federal government to come to their rescue.
The spokesperson for the Nigerian Customs, Joseph Attah said news trending in the social media that one of the recently seized 40 containers by Customs along Apapa road contains United States dollars is misleading.
The Nigerian Customs Service (NCS) through its public relations officer, Joseph Attah, on Wednesday, December 26, revealed that it has distributed 424,391 bags of rice worth N4 billion to IDPs in Borno, Yobe, Adamawa and Edo.
The Nigeria Customs Service said it has impounded about 1,160 bags of 50kg of foreign parboiled rice and five trucks used to convey them in Edo. It also said the rice and trucks worth N101.7 million were seized by its zone c men.
Officials of the Nigeria Customs Service said it has been granted the presidential permit to distribute seized goods and items to orphanages and Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) camps across the country ahead of new year.
The Customs Comptroller General (CG), who made a presentation at an event, opined that religious leaders could play a better role in fighting the menace by not giving respect and honour to corrupt people in the society.
