Spurs were desperate to bounce back from their disappointing draw against Everton in their last fixture to revive their Champions League hopes.

However, Southampton proved to be equal to the task, with the South Coast side snatching a draw during their trip to Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

The hosts were dominant in the early minutes of the tie, with Lucas Moura getting the earliest chance to put his side ahead in the 12th minute.

Despite having a range of options on either side, the forward chose to have a dig himself with a low cross across goal that went wide.

Hugo Lloris was forced into a fantastic save minutes later after Walker-Peter shovelled goal-wards, with the Southampton star missing out on a glorious chance for his side.

However, after sustained effort, the Saints eventually took the lead at the half-hour mark through Danny Ings who planted home a powerful header across Lloris and into the bottom right.

The second half of the tie saw Spurs restore parity in the 60th minute via Gareth Bale who curled an exquisite shot into the top left to make it 1-1.

Son Heung-Min thought he had handed his side the lead with 15 minutes left on the clock, only for VAR to chalk off the goal.

But that did not stop the Korean from earning his side all the three points, with the forward scoring the winner at stoppage time from the penalty spot after Djnepo fouled Sergio Reguilon in the area.

The win was Ryan Mason's first since taking over as Spurs boss from Jose Mourinho who was sacked on Monday, April 19.

Mourinho was handed the marching orders following the team's poor performances in recent weeks.

Spurs now sit sixth on the standings with 53 points, just two off a top-four place.

Earlier, Legit.ng had reported how Spanish outfit Valencia are preparing to sack under-fire manager Javi Gracia and appoint former Tottenham manager Jose Mourinho as replacement.

Spurs fired Mourinho on Monday, April 19, with just six days to their Carabao Cup final against Man City.

It was gathered that Tottenham decided to dispense the manager after just over a season and a half in charge leaving them in seventh position on the Premier League standings and at risk of missing out on a place in the top four.
