- David Luiz is currently battling with a knee injury he picked before the international break against West Ham
- Despite playing the full 90 minutes of the clash, it later emerged he felt a discomfort in his right knee
- He was subsequently ruled out of his side's clash against Liverpool that saw the Gunners suffer a 3-0 defeat
- It now appears the experienced defender could remain on the sidelines longer than it was earlier anticipated
Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta has revealed David Luiz could be out for the remainder of the season through injury.
Arteta made the revelation in the wake of his side's 3-0 defeat in the hands of Liverpool on Saturday, April 3, at the Emirates.
Luiz played no role in the clash, with the defender's last appearance for the Gunners coming in his side's epic 3-3 draw with West Ham just before the international break.
Despite playing the full 90 minutes against the Hammers, the centre-back is understood to have felt a discomfort in his right knee ahead of his side's meeting with Liverpool.
Rob Holding and Gabriel were subsequently drafted in place of Luiz, with Pablo Mari also deployed in the heart of defence.
However, the set up did not bear fruits, with Liverpool blowing away their hosts in the second half courtesy of Diogo Jota's brace and Mohamed Salah's strike.
And speaking in his post-match conference, Arteta painted a grim picture on Luiz's fitness, with the tactician revealing the Brazilian may need a surgery on his knee which could potentially keep him out for the remainder of the season.
"We don’t know, there are a few possibilities on that being a little bit more conservative with the treatment," Arteta said when asked if the defender requires surgery and pressed on whether he will be able to play again this season.
"We’re having to go through surgery, we’re talking with the doctors right now to make the right decision on that but it looks like he can be out for a few weeks at least," he added.
Luiz's imminent long-term absence from action will come as a massive blow to Arteta given he also lost Kieran Tierney to injury against Liverpool.
Meanwhile, Legit.ng had earlier reported that Mikel Arteta has said he is taking the blame for his side's fell to a 3-0 disappointing defeat to Liverpool at the Emirates on the evening of Saturday, April 3.
The north Londoners were without a host of key players for this particular clash, with Bukayo Saka, Emile Smith Rowe, David Luiz and Granit Xhaka all missing.
However, rather than attribute his side's defeat to the absence of the four important squad members, Arteta has said he is to blame for the weekend result.
